There are more than 200 monastic & nunnery schools, who give support to children from the poorest families, some of which are orphans and some are ordained as little novices and nuns. In Myanmar, monasteries and nunneries function as refugee centers for many people with difficulties. For for instance children from problematic families or for those who are very poor. These children then get an education and are taken care for by the monks and nuns and can grow up with a future ahead. As a consequence, villages have a fairly high literacy rate and there are relatively many educated people.
